Barcelona continues to implement a plan to defend the future of the Catalan club, as it aims to sign special deals in the current summer Mercato.
After the recovery of the Blaugrana treasury, the Barca administration developed alternative plans to consolidate the left-back position, after the Marcos Alonso deal was close to collapse.
Alonso was coach Xavi Hernandez’s preferred choice this summer, in order to provide competition for veteran Jordi Alba.
However, the complexity of negotiations with Chelsea to include the Spanish full-back, made Xavi direct his attention to the Portuguese League to remedy the situation.
According to the Portuguese newspaper, “Abola”, Gonzalo Costa, a Sporting Lisbon player, has emerged as one of Barcelona’s most important goals to compensate for the Alonso deal.
The Catalan club wants to take advantage of the player’s explicit desire to leave Lisbon, after he joined the Portuguese club from the age of fourteen until his current age of 22 years.
The newspaper reported that Barcelona has been following the player for years, and believes that he has developed enough to move to the Spanish League.
The 22-year-old is currently in the second team of Lisbon, and has not yet been promoted to the first team, and this is one of the most important reasons for his request to leave.
Costa appeared in 23 matches in various tournaments with Lisbon last season, and scored 3 goals in the team’s shirt.
The player has international experience in the youth stages, having previously represented Portugal under 17 and 16 years.
